Rick Standley on Scott

The main feature of todays music, from the players' perspective, was the extensive use of microtones. Mainly quarter-tones, but some eighth-tones as well. These can cause intonation problems to put it mildly, but back in March the same group of four players were performing new music – and Martin Suckling's piece involved micro-tones, so we were able to build on the skills we honed two months ago while preparing his piece for performance to more quickly and accurately arrive at recording of Scott McLaughlin's piece.

The process of treating the recorded sound with electronic effects and re-recording the result is underway right now. We tried do the electronics 'live' but there was too much to go wrong, too many complexities for the players to deal with while trying to deal with major pitch challenges. To me, this music sounds very like my favourite ECM albums from the early 1980's, eg Eberhard Weber.
