Rick Standley: Maria de Buenos Aires

My name is Rick Standley and I've had the privilege of being the bassist for McFall’s for twenty years. I don't remember how many years ago Robert McFall told me that his ambition was to perform 'Maria' with the group - but I remember thinking that it seemed an impossible thing to do.

We played Piazolla's music from the very beginning and his music has appeared in most programmes that we have performed since 1996: he is the composer we are most associated with.

The recording is important for two reasons. Firstly it is an opportunity to keep forever the brilliance of this group at the height of its powers. Moreover it presents this stunning work at a standard never before heard in a recording: it will be the 'go-to' reference for many years to come. I personally find this exciting because the opportunity to perform and record with some of the finest musicians on earth only comes very infrequently in the course of a career and it will undoubtedly be a career highlight for us all.
