Sep 2013: McFalls on tour

FREAK OUT
Music by Captain Beefheart | Frank Zappa | George Crumb | John Adams | Paul Harrison | Martin Kershaw

Captain Beefheart (real name Don Van Vliet) and Frank Zappa were childhood friends. growing up listening to R&B records together in the 1950s in a small town in the Mojave Desert. Subsequently, they both formed bands - Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band and Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention - and developed an off-beat, freakish style of rock and roll.

George Crumb was roughly contemporary, growing up in West Virginia - similarly off-beat in such ground-breaking works as his 1970 string quartet about the Vietnam War, Black Angels.

Martin Kershaw and Paul Harrison, who also contribute new works to the programme, were both members of the genre-breaking Edinburgh band Trianglehead. Paul Harrison's new work, entitle the dust blows forward, is inspired by poetry and music from Captain Beefheart's album Trout Mask Replica. We also premiere Martin Kershaw's new work Far Vistas.
